A note from the editors of Modern Music Analysis

Hello and welcome back to another installation of MMA’s Monthly Message! Read on for some updates on the publication for the month of July.

First and foremost, Modern Music Analysis has hit a huge milestone as a Medium publication. We have reached 100 followers! We would like to thank each and everyone for their support, writers and editors included. We had no idea that when we started, 6 months ago, we would’ve grown this big. Who knows, maybe there will be a surprise for the next 100!

Recently, we have started the MMA Local Artist Series in which we highlight local artists from the writer’s hometown or area. There are currently 3 installations (with 2 more to come soon) from Josh Herring and his hometown in Georgia. If you’re a writer and are interested in covering your local artist, get in contact with one of the editors — we would love to shine a light on these underrated artists! If you are an artist and interested in having an analysis or review done, email modernmusicanalysis@gmail.com with a sample of music and a small bio about yourself and your motivation as an artist. Most reviews will be churned out over a 2-week basis.

In addition to the Local Artist Series, Modern Music Analysis is continuing to accept general submissions along with our newest section, Throwback Thursday. This section will cover music produced before the year 2000 to open up the amount of works we accept. If interested in writing for MMA, follow the submission guidelines here! For a little insight on the advantages of writing for Modern Music Analysis, as a publication, we have a 100% curation rate (for the month of July) — which really highlights the quality of stories written along with the dedication to excellence from both writers and editors.

Stories of the Month

Josh: First up is Mark Chinapen with his piece on Childish Gambino and Jordan Peele’s, “Get Out”. Mark just so happened to cover one of my favorite artists along with one of my favorite movies. This and the attention to detail in both the movie and Mark’s analysis really stood out to me. Check it out here!

IEYL here! There were so many articles to pick from this month! Out of the great batch of pieces I’m going to pick Divided Words’s article about the influence of European music on American pop records. This piece is rich with history and demonstrates the connectivity between the two regions. There’s also just a lot of good finds in there!

Mark: For my story of the month, I’ve gone with Dylan Skurka’s review of James Blake’s newest single “Say What You Will”. Dylan’s analysis expertly details the narrative of the song’s music video, as well as his own interpretation of the song. It definitely made me reinterpret the music video and quite honestly, brought my attention to more of James Blake’s music and has me anticipating his upcoming album!

That does it for the updates in July! Thanks for reading and as always — thank you for your support. If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, let us know! We are alway looking for ways to improve.
