Baltimore’s own JPEGMAFIA is gearing up to (potentially) drop his next solo outing with this latest single “SIN MIEDO”. Last month, Peggy came through with the invigorating “don’t rely on other men”, and now he’s continuing to feed fans some more new music rather quickly.

As if the NSFW artwork wasn’t an indication, “SIN MIEDO” is an abrasive and in your face track, like most of JPEG’s discography. This new single sees JPEG condense his experimental approach to rap with an emphasis on dance beats and a more familiar song structure in comparison to his earlier Black Ben Carson days.

Since gaining more popularity with albums like LP! and his Danny Brown collab Scaring The Hoes, Peggy’s production has refined in a way that’s palatable to both newcomers and longtime fans such as myself where it doesn’t feel like he’s “sold out” yet still not too weird for first time listeners.

The production on “SIN MIEDO” exemplifies this with its blend of abrasive bass, electric guitar samples, and video gamey synths throughout. At times though, the production does get to be a bit too much. In the song’s middle half for example, the use of live percussions overtake JPEG’s voice and the other instrumentals quite a bit, the mixing on this section was rather poor. However that is the only instance, as the rest of the song sounds polished.

Lyrically we’re getting more of Peggy’s distaste with other rappers, keyboard warriors as well as some humour thrown into the mix. If you’re a fan of JPEGMAFIA then this subject matter isn’t new at all, which while I still enjoy hearing him lash out on Twitter users and his busted hairline, it just felt kind of worn out to me on “SIN MIEDO”. It has me a bit worried that the lyrical content of Peggy’s upcoming music might not expand past these topics, but I do have some hope that it will.

Overall, “SIN MIEDO” is a pretty decent track from JPEGMAFIA. The production is quite solid, once again seeing him condense his sound even further with an approachable style. While lyrically its nothing inherently new we’ve heard from Peggy, it does build on his mainstay topics with the potential that he could maybe deviate from them with the next single (should he drop another).

I’m feeling a 6.5 out of 10 on “SIN MIEDO”. Despite a few gripes, I’m still glad we got new solo music from JPEGMAFIA. This new track has certainly caught my attention, and just makes me all the more eager to see what JPEGMAFIA has in store for us.

Final Rating: 6.5 out of 10.
