The Weeknd is set to release new music very soon. If you’ve been keeping up with Abel these past few months via his social media you’ll notice he’s been nonchalantly teasing new material, reiterating the phrase “the dawn is coming” in tweets and in public appearances. Encouraging fans to say their final goodbyes to the After Hours persona. Last night, Abel seemingly started the new phase by wiping his Instagram and changing his profile picture, if that wasn’t any indication then perhaps this not-so-subtle tweet would be solid confirmation.

Fans assumed he would drop a new song, but in actuality, it was merely a teaser for what’s to come.

Clocking in at just over a minute and a half, the animated video showcases the sun just coming up over a tide, a literal representation that “the dawn is coming”. The new song is a synth-heavy instrumental very reminiscent of his 2013 collaboration with Kavinsky “Odd Look”. We get a glimpse of Abel’s vocals as he harmonizes with the beat, but it’s just a tease.

Based on the video, and Abel’s social media/public persona and interviews, we could expect his new material to be a bit brighter and groovier than his last album, 2020’s After Hours.

In my write-up for his last album, I commended Abel for his take on 80’s new wave and synthwave music, so if this is the direction he’s taking with his new music, then I’m totally on board! The Weeknd is also one of few male artists to ring in new “eras”, his focus on the sonic direction of his music and visual style of videos, performances, and public appearances is a sight to behold. It’ll be interesting to see this new phase of Abel’s career manifest.

Not much is being said right now, but we could expect this new song that was teased or other new material by The Weeknd very, very soon. This year has been ripe with new music from our favourite artists, and with a solid lineup of new releases to follow as the year continues, The Weeknd’s addition is icing on the cake.
