A new era has arrived, The Weeknd’s newest single “Take My Breath” has just been released on streaming platforms tonight. This is Abel’s first glimpse at new music, with speculation that he has a new album coming very soon. The song’s music video is also available to watch as well in all its strobe light glory. Taking a ton of inspiration from films such as Blade and Blue Velvet.

The new single is heavily inspired by 80’s synthpop, there’s a whole retro vibe to the song that it’d genuinely had me bopping and dancing all the way through. Abel’s done this old-school-inspired sound before ( “A Lonely Night”, “In Your Eyes” and his “Dirty Diana” cover to name a few.) but here it sounds like pure perfection. The comparisons to Michael Jackson have been apparent throughout The Weeknd’s career, but I think this new song has cemented that firmly.

As the first single to his upcoming album, the song is upbeat and catchy, a slight deviation from the art-house, dark R&B of his last album After Hours. If “Take My Breath” is any kind of sign, we could expect Abel to deliver a retro-themed, synthed out pop vibe to this new album. In an interview with GQ, writer Mark Anthony Green said the album is full of party records (“ Like real-deal, illuminated-white-tiles-on-the-floor party records.”) so we could expect this new album to be a fun-filled ride. We’ll just have to wait and see!
