How did I not know this? The way I’m teaching my daughter good posture is all wrong. Thank you @Tami Bulmash! Of course, constantly nagging my daughter to sit up straight doesn’t work. It didn’t work when I was a kid either. Nor does making her balance books on her head. (I really did try this). Teaching good posture matters more than ever. Kids sit as much, if not more, than we do. Tami’s advice makes so much sense: Squat to pick things up and bend from the joints. That’s the point of having joints. Use your hip joints when you rise from a chair, and don’t lead with your chest or arch your back. This causes strain. Think about your head as a balloon lifting up to the sky (kids like this metaphor). There’s so much more in Tami’s terrific story on helping kids improve their posture.
