Telling Your Kids About “Chill City”

You’re probably thinking, Oh no, Chill City? What’s that? Something else for me to worry about as a parent?!

But don’t worry, Chill City is a magical place! A place where you can be at peace — with or without your kids. Although, it isn’t actually a physical place. It’s more like an idea.

Or a mood.

Or a vibe.

Chill City is any space — a room in your house, inside the car, at the movie theater, the restaurant — where you are trying to relax, take it easy or just have one chill moment in your day.

If you practice peaceful parenting like me, you likely find yourself looking for creative ways to teach or correct your children without getting angry or doing something that would result in emotional or physical harm. I’m immensely fortunate enough to have a well-behaved daughter, but she’s only 8 and still does things that 8-year-olds do. And one thing that 8-year-olds do is have energy all the time. Since I’m such a cool mom, my daughter likes to put all that energy on me.

She doesn’t do anything bad or wrong — perhaps she’s just being a little louder than I would prefer or being distracting by dancing around the room or being so excited about something she can’t stop herself from blabbering on about it. And while it is essential to spend time with your kids…
