A Lawyer, Her Sailor and How to Bring Authenticity to Memoir Writing

For this month’s interview in the ‘Women In The Spotlight’ series, I am introducing you too another of Medium’s favourite personal essay writers, Conni Walkup Hull.

As you read Conni’s work you will very quickly become aware that her life is full, vibrant and over flowing with the best kind of attitude. One of the greatest parts about following her work, is she leaves you inspired and feeling awake. I’m only a decade or so younger but she’s definitely who I’d like to be when I grow up.

How would you describe your writing here on Medium in terms of style, genre and the kinds of topics you cover?

My writing generally falls into the categories of memoir, personal essay, and poetry, although I truly do love to write some humorous pieces about the absurdities of life — and my life with a handsome but incorrigible Sailor.

Alongside being a writer here on Medium, you are also a lawyer, only starting law school at 49 which is incredibly inspiring and telling of your tenacious personality. How has…
