According to a 2022 study by MetLife, women in STEM are twice as likely to leave their jobs as women outside the industry, citing stress and burnout as the primary factors. Even more alarmingly, “the study found that 70 percent of women in STEM believed their employer valued their male colleagues more than them, compared to 38 percent of women working in other fields.”
Unfortunately, this counters evidence that including more women in senior leadership positions creates companies that “are more profitable, more socially responsible, and provide safer, higher-quality customer experiences — among many other benefits.” (Source: Harvard Business Review)
We must lift each other up. As a woman in STEM, it can be challenging to find a female idol, coach, or mentor, and it only gets harder the higher you climb. Don’t stop looking. And don’t be afraid to get creative in your search. I unexpectedly found inspiration on the FIFA field.
