As an Indian woman raised in a Sikh family, long hair was always a big deal. In Indian culture, long hair on women signifies beauty, femininity, fertility, and conformity. In the Sikh faith, men and women are required to have uncut hair.
Until I was 13, I had waist-length dark brown hair that I had never cut, and I believed it was the most beautiful part of me.
Unfortunately, hair loss runs in my family. My three older sisters once had long, uncut tresses like me, but female pattern hair loss caused their hair to thin in their teens. So, when my hair began to thin at 13, I wasn’t surprised, but it was still heartbreaking.
Every morning before school, I would do my hair and be left with clumps of hair on my brush. I had to take deep breaths and remind myself to enjoy my hair while I had it.
