The pages of so many publications have been full of concern, analyses and discussion about the happenings on Medium. Be it the actions of scammers impacting our pay in terms of genuine interaction and reading time, or the volume of AI generated work… it hasn’t been an easy ride of late.

What is has highlighted for me is how vulnerable we are when we rely on one source for our financial income or as a way of connecting our work with the world. A lot of you would have experienced that with the difficulties over at TikTok also.

Thing is, as women, we’ve been here before and we should have already learnt this lesson.

In decades gone by, it was a socially accepted norm to rely on the ‘man of the house’ for its income and financial stability. Yet even then when you speak to the grandmothers and great grandmother, women were smart enough to squirrel away emergency cash so they could maintain some amount independence and safety.

It’s been suggested numerous times that the reason divorce numbers have risen so sharply over recent years is because women are finally in a situation in which they are completely dependent. They have the ability to choose.
