Being the month of ghosts and ghouls, I found myself thinking on the ways in which the word ‘ghost’ has changed in recent years. So commonly heard but rarely about a haunting or Halloween related theme. We think instead of being ghosted in dating or relationship terms, we worry about becoming invisible as we age, and the longer we’re alive the more we undoubtedly will have lost and become haunted by.

We’re often told that ghosts are relics of the past, lingering between worlds — forgotten yet unforgotten. But perhaps the most haunting ghosts are not the spectral figures we see in movies, but the ones we carry with us: the ghosts of relationships that ended without closure, of conversations that should have been had, of opportunities lost.

In life, we are taught that human connection is vital. From birth, we crave it — whether it be through friendship or romantic bonds. And yet, as we navigate this world, so many of us find ourselves ghosted: left behind by those who once mattered, people who fade away without explanation or warning. These “ghostings” haunt us, the unfinished stories that linger in our minds, leaving us to wonder if we ever truly mattered.
