But you’re constantly worried about making mistakes because you’re scared of harming your baby for life since you have no idea what you’re doing.

So to truly relax and enjoy motherhood, reframe your situation and gain self-worth and self-confidence with this powerful prayer.

A dear friend of mine experienced a stillbirth when she was 36 weeks pregnant.

It rocked me to my core. My husband and I were thinking of falling pregnant, and it seemed like my worst fear manifested.

But It Got Me Thinking

You can do everything in your power to make life as safe and nurturing as possible for your baby, but you cannot control everything.

At some point, you must realise that you need to put your faith in God, and my friend’s terrible experience was that point for me.

It changed my relationship with Jesus Christ — no longer was I trying to control everything myself, but I put my trust in God for protection.

Protection for myself, my family members and my unborn child.

Pregnancy Is Fraught With Risk

There is very little in your control when you’re pregnant.

Sure, you can control what you eat and drink and stay as safe as possible. But you cannot control how your baby develops, and you cannot control outside forces, like whether you’ll be in a car accident.

You also do not know how the pregnancy will affect your health and what that would mean for your baby’s health.

So every day of my pregnancy, I prayed and realised anew that I needed to surrender and trust in a Higher Being.

Nothing is quite as humbling as being terrified for your baby’s health and realising that you can’t control every aspect of your pregnancy.

Daily Prayers

Every day, my family and I prayed long and hard for my new baby (and me) during the pregnancy and once he was born. (We still do!)

The insecurities of pregnancy carried over after the birth of my son. Now, there were more outside forces I couldn’t control, and to top it all off, I had no idea what I was doing.

I struggled to breastfeed, didn’t have the support I needed (we were at the start of the pandemic, level 5 lockdown), and was second-guessing every move I made.

As a new mother, my self-esteem and self-confidence plummeted, and I reached new depths of depression and anxiety.

But God was there for us, and He provided.

I found the breastfeeding support I needed and eventually gained self-confidence as a mom.

It’s An Ongoing Struggle

I’m a perfectionist and people pleaser, and I have suffered from anxiety and depression my whole adult life.

So it’s an ongoing struggle to maintain my sense of self-worth as it’s:

  1. Impossible to be perfect.
  2. Impossible to be a “perfect mom”.
  3. Impossible to please everyone.

But daily prayers really do work, and I encourage you to try it for yourself during this difficult time.

Your Insecurities As A New Mom

First-time moms are especially vulnerable to low self-esteem, low self-worth and low self-confidence:

  • Nothing prepares you for your new life as a mom.
  • Your whole identity has changed, you have a new role to play, and you need to find yourself again.
  • Your hormones are all over the place, trying to readjust after giving birth.
  • And you suffer from an extreme lack of sleep (those sleepless nights are no joke!).

And there are so many things you are expected to do that you have no idea how to do. You also:

  • Second-guess your every decision.
  • Wonder whether you will fail as a parent.
  • Worry that you are screwing up your little baby for life.
  • Can’t keep track of everything you have to do. There are simply too many things to keep track of.
  • Realise you can’t do everything. It’s just not possible.

All of this makes you vulnerable to postpartum depression and postpartum anxiety, especially during those first few weeks after your new arrival.

Why Prayer Works

Prayer works through the power of repetition — it constantly renews your faith and trust in God and God’s plan, and it helps you overcome your limiting beliefs.

I’ve been praying daily since falling pregnant, which has been a constant reassurance for me.

One of my best decisions ever was to surrender completely to God — my life has changed for the better. He is with me every step of the way, and I can see His presence in all aspects of my life.

How To Pray

The way you pray is a very personal matter.

Long story short — do what works for you. Here is a list of some of the ways you can pray:

  1. Whenever you remember — I do this often. Throughout daily life, when a scary thought occurs to me, or I’m grateful for something, I say a little prayer to our loving heavenly father.
  2. Pray before you go to bed at night — I’m not a big fan of this, as I always fall asleep while trying to pray before bed! I much instead pray when I’m awake and focused.
  3. You can try to make a habit of praying at a specific time of day — whichever time works for you. But this may be difficult for a mom with a newborn to do.
  4. You can also pray in pictures or images — you don’t necessarily have to try and find the right words. Often I simply picture these giant, golden, glowing Hands enveloping my family unit, protecting us from all harm.
  5. Also, try to be more active in your prayer — say THANKS to God rather than only asking for help. For example, “Thanks for the strength to deal with this, God”. Rather than, “Please help me deal with this.” Doing this helps to reframe your mind and starts you off on a positive foot.

But most importantly: Put your faith and trust in the word of God, the will of God, and in God himself.

Below is a prayer for you, mommy, to help you with your low self-worth and self-confidence.

Prayer For Self-Worth And Self-Confidence

Dear God,

I pray to you, oh King of kings, for strength, compassion and acceptance.

I’m exhausted and broken — I need Your help to put the pieces back together.

I struggle with negative self-talk — I need Your help to be kind and gentle with myself.

I try to control everything and fail miserably — I need Your help to accept the things I cannot change and to trust in You utterly.

Dear Lord,

I don’t know where else to turn for help.

My lack of confidence is crippling. I don’t feel worthy of love or worthy of being the mother to my precious baby.

I know it’s human nature, but I doubt my own abilities, and I’ve fallen on hard times.

Help me take the first step to a new day. Banish the spirit of fear that overwhelms me with a ray of your brilliance.

Dear Heavenly Father,

Take me in your arms and make me the best version of myself.

Hug me tightly, oh Lord. I need your comfort.

You created me in God’s image and did not create me to be “lesser than”.

Help me to truly and humbly accept that, internalise it and believe it with my whole being.

Dear Father,

You cover me with unconditional love.

Now that I have my own baby, I realise just how much You love me. And I can’t even comprehend that You love me so much that You sacrificed Your own Child on the cross.

Help me to feel worthy of that great love. Help me to feel confident in that love.

Christ Jesus,

You are the child of God.

You know the best way to lead me to self-confidence and self-worth. I put my trust in You, wholly and utterly.

Dear Jesus,

You are the Son of God.

You know me — my innermost thoughts and feelings are bared to You. I put my faith in You, wholly and utterly.

Lord Jesus,

Infuse me with positive energy. Take my negativity and doubts and replace them in all areas of my life with Your light.

This new child deserves the best of me, and I want to set an example for my sweet baby. Help me live up to Your image.

Oh, Jesus,

I strive to match your pure heart by following God’s word. Help keep me on the path to heaven.

Oh, Jesus Christ,

Your good work on earth humbles me — help me be a loving mother and raise my newborn baby in Your image.

Holy Spirit,

You are the Spirit of God — cover me in the grace of God.

You embody perfect love — infuse me with Your love and peace.

You are a wonderful light — grant me Your clarity and wisdom.

I have a weary spirit — lift my mood and provide a strong foundation for my heart.

I want to be the best mother possible for my sweet child — help me to accept that my best is good enough.

I have a crippling fear of failure — help me trust in You to show me the way.

Oh, Spirit of God,

We are new parents, and our steps are faltering. Help us to be the best we can be for our precious child.

Keep us all in good health. Help me to do the right things for this beautiful gift that is my newborn during these first days, first weeks and always.

Holy Spirit,

You are the true source of Light, and Your ray of brilliance lights me.

Jesus,

You show us God’s love, and Your eternal well of love slakes my thirst.

Oh, Father, oh Lord of lords,

Your strength keeps me going through the darkest of times.

Thank You for supporting me.

Thank You for your love.

Thank You for your protection.

Thank You for my self-confidence.

Thank You for my self-worth.

Thank You for standing by me, always and forever.

I praise Your name, and I kneel in awe, oh Lord.

I ask for forgiveness, oh my God.

I’m only human, and sometimes my thoughts and actions stray. Keep me on the right path, oh Lord.

I pray this by the power of the Holy Spirit, the Son of God and the Heavenly Father.

Amen.

Final Thoughts

The ways of the Lord are mysterious but trust that He will be there for you, and He will be. Good things are in your future. I know it.

Mama, Christ’s power is limitless — so please accept my humble prayer for you:

Dear mama, may God love, bless and protect you and your precious gift — your newborn baby. In Jesus’ name, amen.
