I’m completely smitten with finding joy in the things I love, and my beekeeping hobby is a perfect example. It might seem a little odd, especially living in Miami with its subtropical climate, but there’s something truly magical about caring for a hive and becoming immersed in the intricate world of buzzing bees, extracting their golden nectar. The entire process, from building the hive to collecting the honey, is a meditative experience that allows me to escape the chaos of daily life and simply be present.

You might be thinking, “Olivia, bees are messy!” You’re absolutely right, but the calming effect it has on me is worth every sticky finger and bee sting (I’ve had a few, let me tell you!). I truly believe that passion fuels productivity, and beekeeping, messy as it may be, has made me a more focused and efficient professional. It’s a reminder that when we pursue our passions, we naturally become more productive in other aspects of our lives.

Finding Balance in the Buzz

You might be wondering how I manage to juggle being an aerospace engineer, a wife, a mom of two, and a beekeeper. It’s definitely a balancing act! Some days feel like a whirlwind of work deadlines, school events for my girls, and those crucial hive check-ups.

I’ve had to make tough choices, like choosing between a work call and a honey harvest, but I’ve learned that my passions are too important to sacrifice for a busy schedule. My trusty planner and scheduling app have become my lifesavers. I’m a pro at strategically allocating time, even just 30 minutes for my bees, without feeling overwhelmed. It’s about finding balance and using those helpful tools to make sure everything gets done.

Chunking Through Complexity

Austin excels at breaking down complex projects. He takes huge woodworking visions, like an intricately carved bookshelf, and transforms them into manageable steps. He meticulously plans each stage, from selecting the perfect wood to creating detailed sketches. This approach, carefully breaking down projects, allows him to tackle even the most ambitious woodworking endeavors.

I’ve adapted this method for my own career path as an aerospace engineer. I often work on intricate design projects that require meticulous attention to detail. Chunking helps me approach these tasks with confidence, breaking down complex equations and calculations into smaller, more manageable chunks. This technique makes working on these demanding projects less daunting, allowing me to stay focused and efficient. It’s amazing how simply breaking down a task can make it feel less overwhelming and so much more achievable!

Delegation and Teamwork

Life can be pretty crazy, right? But I’m all about finding ways to make it easier. My husband, Austin, is my partner in crime when it comes to juggling family and our own interests. We work together, like a well-oiled machine, sharing the load. Austin is the master chef, making delicious meals, while I’m the cleaning queen, keeping things organized and sparkling. We involve our daughters, Sharon and Katherine, in age-appropriate chores. Sharon helps load the dishwasher, while Katherine, our little water baby, practices her swimming skills by rinsing the vegetables.

Sharing responsibilities makes life easier and teaches our girls how important teamwork and household contributions are. It’s a win-win! We get to pursue our passions while fostering a sense of family responsibility.

Supporting Passions

Everyone deserves a chance to chase their dreams, big or small. That’s why Austin and I work hard to create a place where Sharon and Katherine can explore their interests. Sharon has a real talent for sculpting with clay. She spends hours creating whimsical characters and tiny landscapes, showing off her vast imagination.

Austin, being the incredible dad he is, sets up a special area in our backyard for her to sculpt, making sure she has all the tools and resources she needs. He even helps her build a little display shelf to show off her creations. Katherine, our fearless swimmer, loves nothing more than being in the water. She practices her strokes for hours, laughing as she glides through the pool. Austin, the champion dad, takes Katherine to swimming lessons, encouraging her passion for the sport. We believe that these passions, no matter how simple they seem, are crucial for their growth. They inspire creativity, encourage personal development, and give them a sense of purpose. It’s all part of our goal to raise happy, fulfilled individuals, and it all starts with supporting their passions.

A Passionate Life is a Productive Life

The key is simple: find what makes you happy. You’ll be amazed at how much more you get done when you’re doing things you love.

Planning, breaking tasks into smaller chunks, delegating, and a supportive environment are crucial for success. It’s not about giving up your passions for a busy schedule; it’s about finding a balance that works for you. Don’t hesitate to explore your interests, regardless of their size.
