Life has its share of rough days, ones that cast a shadow over even the brightest spirits.

In the past few days, I found myself in the midst of such a period. Nothing major had occurred, yet I was overwhelmed by a deep sense of sadness. I lacked the energy and motivation to do even the simplest tasks, like eating. During this time, my husband affectionately coined a phrase that resonated deeply: “If khati peti rooti has a face, that’s Niharika.”

Essentially, he was asking how I could be downcast when my life was filled with blessings and the trials I faced were relatively minor.

These moments of self-reflection led me to a realization about my role in the family. My father had often told me, “Dear, stay happy; your smile brightens the room.” Back then, I didn’t fully understand the depth of his words, but I cherished his habit of sitting beside me until I opened up, even when I offered flimsy excuses. He could always tell when I was not being entirely truthful. It was a valuable lesson in empathy and understanding, teaching me the power of a simple smile.

Even today, in my married life, I continue to see how my mood can have a profound impact on the atmosphere within our household. My beliefs play a vital role, as my outlook on life can shape the perceptions of those around me. If I harbour negativity towards others, it often reflects back at me.

Conversely, when I wake up with joy and gratitude, my presence seems to radiate love and positivity, and it brings warmth to our home. This ripple effect extends even to the work I do; when I am productive and engaged, it positively influences my hubby Gagan’s work as well.

Push yourself

It’s perfectly normal to have moments of feeling down, but lingering in that state for an extended period can become a habit. Sometimes, a small push can work wonders, and it often involves shifting our perspective from dwelling on the negatives to focusing on the things we love most.

For instance, I have a deep passion for travel, and just thinking about it brings an instant rush of excitement. So, to lift my spirits, I begin making travel plans and exploring destinations online. This simple act has a remarkable way of rejuvenating my mood, and I feel reenergized.

Acceptance and Self-reflection

It’s crucial to understand that external circumstances often lie beyond our control. Instead of rebelling and asking ‘why me,’ I’ve found that seeking understanding is a far more constructive approach. Sharing our perspectives humbly can lead to positive changes.

One invaluable piece of advice I received from Gagan, who encouraged me to practice noting three things I love and three things I disliked each day. This simple exercise has had a significant impact on my journey, guiding me toward self-improvement and a deeper appreciation for the positives in my life.

Be Your Spotlight

I envision myself at the center, surrounded by all my family members, forming a protective circle. In this mental circle, I find strength and security, knowing that challenges can’t breach our united front. They are all here to be by my side, giving me support and strength.

When I share positivity, kindness, and love, those feelings come back to me even stronger. I have faith in myself and my actions, and I entrust the rest to the universe.

I’ve come to realise that the way our moods affect our families is a testament to the depth of love they have for us. It’s a reminder of the bonds we share and the unique power of family. In those moments of vulnerability when I allow myself to be supported and loved, I’ve learned the true essence of what it means to be a part of a family. Together, we can create a loving environment where the power of love and gratitude prevails.

Sometimes, all it takes is opening our eyes to find happiness. I’ve learned that happiness isn’t reliant on others; it’s a treasure we unearth within ourselves, a practice we must cultivate to stay content with the blessings we possess.

The laughter can brighten the gloomiest of days,
The warmth can comfort the weariest souls,
And the love can mend the deepest wounds.
