The Yearning For A Friendship That Once Meant Everything
The importance of making time for life-long friends as we age
“You guys should come for dinner over the holidays.” The question hangs in the air, floating between us in the crowded kitchen.
My best friend, the woman I have known since middle school, looks up at me and smiles, “that would be nice,” she replies.
She is about to say more, but my six-year-old son appears and wants to tell me a story. From across the house, she hears her baby daughter wail and she rushes off to find which relative is holding her.
We are dragged in opposite directions. We never re-visit the conversation again.
Such is the case with adult friendships.
We can no longer see each other every day, or have such a visible presence in each others lives, but the love remains.
All the memories, secrets, and life we have shared together remains.
No amount of distance or time between visits will change that.
We met in middle school, our early friendship fueled by our shared love of softball, sports, and reading.
