To my younger self: we survived
Reflections on overcoming challenges and growing stronger
“If you can talk to your younger self, what would you like to say?”
As I write down these words while listening to Taylor’s version of Never Grow Up, I can’t help but feel a mix of nostalgia and excitement for the journey that lies ahead for you.
Everything has changed — both good and bad — leaving a mixed bag of emotions. Remember the gum snacks we used to eat every time school ended? Yeah, we don’t like it anymore. I don’t know, I think our tongue changed during adulthood with our evolving taste buds. It seems our palate has shifted. Do you remember our favorite Pop Ice store where we could customize our drinks with any flavors or toppings we liked? The store is closed now, I think they don’t produce it anymore. The bittersweet changes remind us of the impermanence of life and the need to cherish the moments that define who we are.
Oh, remember the times when you loved a toy you saw at the store, but our parents couldn’t afford it at that time? Guess what? We can afford it now. Instead, I’ve indulged in lots of — and I mean lots of — childlike play sessions whenever I come across it. Do you know the magic sand painting stand we admired in the mall? I can afford to play with it now. I’ve also explored numerous children’s playgrounds, often with our niece (yes, we have a niece now. What a surprise, huh?). I’ve done all of this to make up for the things we couldn’t do in the past, to bring happiness to you.
Many things have happened along our journey. And in the face of life’s pressures, there were times when I wished I had never grown up. I miss being you — calm and happy, without having to worry about the future.
Life has taken us on a different path than what we once dreamt of, and I think you won’t like it at first. Sorry for the disappointment.
But surprisingly, we find contentment in where we are. We’re comfortable. Of course, some ups and downs and uncertainties lie ahead, but we’ve learned to embrace the journey with resilience and gratitude. We may not have achieved every aspiration, but we’re doing just fine, and that’s what truly matters.
So thank you. Thank you for keeping the dream alive. For making me who I am today.
I’m not sure if you’ve reached an age where you can fully understand this letter, but let me brief you with a few pieces of advice that might help you along the way.
First and foremost, believe in yourself. You are capable of far more than you can imagine. It is such a waste of time to be insecure. Don’t let self-doubt or the opinions of others hold you back. Embrace your uniqueness, talents, and quirks. They will be the keys to unlocking your true potential.
Secondly, cherish the present moment. It’s easy to get caught up in the past or worry about the future, but life happens here and now. Be fully present in each experience, savoring the little joys and learning from the challenges.
Life will always give you lemons — at every opportunity it gets. You might face numerous failures and mistakes, multiple heartbreaks, and endless moments of sadness where you realize that people will come and go sooner or later. But please keep in mind that it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the world. Embrace them as valuable learning opportunities. Don’t be afraid to take risks and step out of your comfort zone, for that’s where growth and self-discovery happen.
Life can also give you apple juices and pancakes. Remember that better days are coming.
Also, nurture your relationships. Friends and family will be your pillars of support through life’s ups and downs. Make time for them, listen to them, and be there when they need you. These connections will be some of the most significant sources of happiness and strength in your life.
Prioritize self-care and well-being. Take care of your physical, emotional, and mental health. Develop healthy habits early on, whether it’s regular exercise, meditation, or pursuing hobbies that bring you joy. Your well-being is the foundation for everything else in life.
Finally, be kind to yourself. You might make mistakes or face setbacks, but that’s all part of being human. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding you would offer a dear friend.
Life is an incredible journey, and you have a marvelous adventure ahead of you. I can’t wait for you to experience it. Embrace it with an open heart, a curious mind, and a positive attitude. Keep dreaming big, and never stop believing in the power of your dreams.
Don’t worry, everything’s going to be okay :)
“Life can be heavy, especially if you try to carry it all at once, part of growing up and moving into new chapters of your life is about catch or release. What I mean by that is, knowing what things to keep and what things to release. You can’t carry all things, all grudges, all updates on your ex, all enviable promotions your school bully got at the bedge fund his uncle started. Decide what is yours to hold and let the rest go.” — Taylor Swift on her NYU Commencement Speech
