Truth, Writing, and Telling It Like It Is — Marcia Abboud on Owning Her Story

As you all know, the ‘Women in the Spotlight’ series is something I wanted to create so that I could introduce you to the women on Medium whose writing has meant the most to me.

Marcia Abboud is a writer I have been reading for a long while now. She’s honest and insightful, and her writing has reminded me again and again that no matter what has happened, my life today can be the most vibrant and alive place I could ever hope to be.

Parenthood, marriage, divorce, what it means to watch the decades roll by and all the juicyness in-between, Marcia Abboud is the perfect sassy best friend and I’m so glad I get to introduce you to her.

How would you describe your writing here on Medium in terms of style, genre and the kinds of topics you cover?

I write memoir and personal essay based on the events of my life. It’s been colourful, to say the least. I have a reputation for writing about ‘hard’ topics and traumatic things in a way that’s relatable to others. It’s not all trauma, doom and gloom, though.
