What It Is Like to Have 2 Kids With Asd on Opposite Ends of the Spectrum

One high-functioning and one low-functioning

Both my boys have ASD and SPD. My oldest son A is high-functioning ASD and an avoider with his SPD. My youngest son C is very low-functioning and a seeker with his SPD. SPD is Sensory Processing Disorder. Both boys are on the opposite side of things. Which can make things a little difficult.

A can do anything anyone else is doing. He has his quirks. With his sensory issue, it can seem overwhelming. He can not stand the feel of jeans against his skin. He hates loud noises. He avoids anything that is loud or too bright. He loves video games. He can beat most new games he gets in a week. He wants to do video game design. He usually hates trying new things, but he started band this year. He is not a problem. He is working through his struggles now without shutting down. He has come a very long way. From being a 4lb baby who spent his first year in and out of hospitals to this amazing 11 year old. He may not know social ques, and struggles with making friends, but he is the easy one.

My youngest C is low-functioning, nonverbal, and a seeker with his SPD. He has no sense of danger. He can not be trusted alone. He can get violent when upset. He is 8 years old. There have been times that he has been in a…
