Why “Women Deserve to Feel Safe” Shouldn’t be a Controversial Statement
October 2024 is Domestic Violence Awareness Month
All too often, women are the victims of violent crimes like rape and domestic violence. When you speak up about something like this, whether publicly or with friends, you can find yourself trying to validate your experience. Regurgitating graphic details, reliving the pain. People feel like they need the trauma porn to be able to judge for themselves that your experience was, in fact, worthy of being called rape or domestic violence.
This is why so many victims don’t come forward. They know that it’s an uphill battle to get people to believe you, even when there are cuts and bruises on your body. Having to constantly seek validation from the world can be exhausting, and retraumatizing.
