Women Tea

Isn't it hilarious?

I remember the first time I came across the term “women tea.”

Ya, what is that and why does it seem to be funny to some people…

To be clear, it has nothing to do with women making tea. Not at all.

I couldn’t help but laugh and think, “Are some people really that hollow?” Turns out our dear self proclaimed Sigmas are. This term, which at first seemed like a harmless joke, revealed a deeper issue of how women’s voices are often dismissed.

For those of you who didn’t pay much heed to this dumb insult (I mean …of course) — the “Women hahaha” (or Women Coffee or Hmph, Women) meme originated from a YouTube video uploaded by Finnish YouTuber and SFM animator Tipsy Duck. The part of the animated video where one says “women” and then they both start laughing and drinking their beverage became a viral meme template in May 2021.

The irony, of course, is dripping thicker than honey in a Southern sweet tea. The term itself was coined by two grown men gossiping over, well, tea! Here we have the very behavior they’re trying to mock – grown men indulging in a supposedly “feminine” activity – being used to belittle women’s voices. It’s like getting lectured on manners by someone who eats their peas with a knife.

And thus our idle know-it-all scrollers who could not get over it started using the term as a shorthand for dismissing any opinion deemed unimportant, emotional, or — gasp! — feminine. It’s a way to silence women and invalidate their perspectives. But hey, guess what? We’re not here for the shade.

The age-old tradition of patronizing women’s thoughts has evolved over time. From the days of a condescending pat on the head to today’s dismissive internet memes, it’s the same story with a modern twist.

In the bygone days, men (and frankly, some insecure women too) were the undisputed champions of the eye roll and the condescending “bless your heart.” It was practically a social sport — a woman dares to express an opinion? WHAM! Out comes the

“you’re just too emotional”

or the ever-classic,

“that’s cute, honey, but why don’t you go play with your dolls?”

Fast forward to the age of social media, and the good ol’ “bless your heart” has gotten a digital makeover. Enter “women tea,” the internet’s favorite backhanded compliment. See a woman express a well-reasoned argument online? Prepare for a tsunami of dismissive GIFs and hashtags — because apparently, a woman with an opinion is just as shocking as a lukewarm cup of Earl Grey.

But here’s the hilarious part: social media has become a double-edged sword. Sure, the insecure brigade is still out there, armed with their virtual eye rolls. But guess what? Women are louder, prouder, and brewing up a storm of their own! We’re using our voices, dissecting these microaggressions, and calling out the nonsense. Yes honestly that's the word.

So, to all the insecure men and women out there who still think “women tea” is a valid comeback — we see you, and frankly, we’re sipping on something a little stronger. Maybe it’s confidence? Solidarity? A healthy dose of “get over yourself”?

Cheers!
