Getting Dad at the Bar

He was no bigger than the stools the men sat on

My dad, the eldest of five siblings, would have to go to neighborhood bars to get his father. I can see him: a big kid, in charge, but still a child, walking to the bar through city streets. What was he thinking? Was he playing a script in his mind about what he’d have to say to get his father to leave the alcohol behind?
