What Is a Testnet & Why Is It Important During Development?

A testnet is a separate blockchain network that is used for testing purposes. Tesnets can launched before as well as after the launch of a MainNet. Testnets allow developers to experiment with new ideas and features without affecting the main network. These test networks are used to identify and fix issues that may arise before a new feature is released onto the mainnet. Testnets can also be used to test performance and ensure that the main network is able to handle expected levels of traffic.

Unlike the mainnet, a testnet does not use real value. Transactions that are conducted on a testnet do not have monetary value and are not recorded on the main blockchain. This allows developers to test new ideas and implementations without risk.

Testnets are usually much smaller in scale than mainnets. This is because they are used for testing purposes, and do not need to support the same level of traffic as the main network. As a result, testnets provide live environment which very similar to the mainchain and support early adopters to start building without waiting for the mainnet to be launched.

MOI’s Testnet Releases

Testnet releases continue to play a pivotal role in MOI’s trajectory. Our first iteration of the testnet, INDUS, was named after the Indus valley civilization. INDUS enabled the validators to earn rewards for their actions since it was an incentivized testnet, whereas for all the other users, it was a concrete step towards provenance.

This testnet was launched to the public on 21st of May 2022. INDUS has been thriving for more than 7 months while the MOI team preps for a brand new testnet release to introduce new features supported by the MOI protocol.

The second release of a MOI testnet is called Babylon, a credit to another great and ancient civilization. Babylon is scheduled to be rolled out in the second month of 2023, and will be exclusive to the people invited by the team.

In this release, the validators will be given the opportunity to earn higher rewards via their activity. Adding on to that, the adopters will be able to execute asset-based logic on the Babylon Testnet with the help of the in-house PoXt consensus algorithm, thereby enabling the ISM model of execution.

The MOI team is also planning a third release of a MOI testnet (to be called GIZA) towards the middle of 2023. The details for this release will roll out soon, however the major focus will be attributed towards extending the PoXt algorithm to enable support staking and reputation management!

Summary

2023 is going to be a grand year for the MOI protocol. With the already released INDUS, and the upcoming releases (Babylon & Giza), we will collaboratively evaluate and develop the technology that will make the dream of a humanized internet a reality.

The MOI team looks forward to participating in these testnets and calls on the community to participate, share in, and support their development. You can become a MOI validator today: https://validator.moi.technology/
