Tucked away in the deep woods of Alabama, Cahawba (also spelled Cahaba) was once the state’s first capital, (1819–1826) In the early 1800’s, it was a thriving antebellum river town until frequent flooding led it to be abandoned shortly after the Civil War. Today, the remains, crumbling buildings, 19th century cemeteries, and eerily silent streets, are a ghost hunter’s delight. Today it is also an important archeological site.
