The South is full of surprises. While many travelers head for the well-known beaches of Florida, the Carolinas, and the Gulf Coast, a few lesser known islands remain largely undiscovered by lots of people. These hidden gems are full of breathtaking scenery, rich history, and local traditions that make each one a different experience. If you’re looking for an adventure beyond the usual popular tourist beaches, these Southern islands are well worth the journey.

Sapelo Island

Located just seven miles off the coast of Georgia, Sapelo Island, the fourth largest barrier island in the state, feels like a place lost in time. Only accessible by ferry, the island is free from the hustle and bustle of modern life. Spanish moss decorates ancient oak trees, and the natural sounds of mother-nature replace the noise of the city.
