Podcasting can actually be…quick and painless (no, really!)

Okay, so you want to start a podcast. You’ve decided on a niche, you feel confident about episode length and frequency…now what?

My wife and I recently embarked on this same journey. Our timeline from developing initial ideas to recording and publishing episodes took a little over a year. HOWEVER…

…we paused for multiple months when our second child was born. Once our little one was on a regular sleep schedule, we were off and running!

Enter, Mic’d In Bed, our marriage and relationship podcast.

Here’s a rough breakdown of our workflow and process:

Sunday — Plan out social media posts for each week. We try to do 1–2 Instagram posts and 1 LinkedIn post promoting the show and specific episodes. We use Google Sheets to draft captions and hashtags ahead of time. Total Time: 30–45 minutes.

Monday — Edit audio of latest episode. We use Logic Pro X for recording, editing, and mixing. Generally, only light adjustments are needed. Total Time: 45–60 minutes.

Tuesday — Decide on episode topic and map out talking points for the following week’s show. Total Time: 30–45 minutes.

Wednesday — Publish newest episode. We use RSS.com for publishing and hosting Mic’d In Bed. For less than $100/year we are able to have unlimited file uploads, so we never have to worry about episode length. Publishing is typically scheduled a few days in advance, for premiere at 8:00 AM every Wednesday. Total Time: N/A.

Thursday — Publish social media posts. Post 1 typically happens on Wednesday, but can also occur on Thursday. Post 2 on Instagram tends to occur here as well. Total Time: 10–15 minutes.

Friday — Record next week’s episode. Depending on how the kids are and our level of exhaustion, recording doesn’t always happen on Friday, but Friday is our preferred recording day. Our setup is as simple as it gets — one podcast microphone shared between the two of us, a pair of headphones for me to monitor audio and feedback, and Logic Pro X, where we directly record. Logic Pro X runs about $200.00 — all upfront. We use a Maono AU-A04 USB Microphone to record, which currently runs about $60.00 on Amazon. Total Time: 45-60 minutes.

Saturday — Rest.

See? No more than 1 hour per day time commitment — generally done after the kids are asleep from 7:30–8:30 PM.

As for cost, I use Logic Pro X for music production already. BUT, if you have a Mac or iPhone, you can record directly in GarageBand instead, which wouldn’t cost a thing.

That leaves publishing and hosting costs, which come in at around $10 per month, and, possibly, a microphone. Though, if you’re recording into an iPhone, the built-in mic has decent quality — you just may want to invest in a pop filter to prevent plosives (trying saying THAT into your mic a few times to see what I mean).

RSS.com can have you up and running with robust metrics and analytics, episode descriptions, and automatic distribution in a matter of minutes (I think our setup time clocked in at 6–7 minutes, no joke).
