Getting the Most Out of Lists

We’ve created Lists with flexibility in mind — with a categorization system with your interests in mind, you can adapt Actions to your workflow. For many of your tasks, Lists help organize your Action Cards on a project or subject basis. However, because we’ve left Lists open with possibilities, you don’t have to subscribe to just one method of getting things done.

Lists and Schedule work together seamlessly to keep you on track and on time. But since these are fundamentally different entities, Action Cards can belong to one but not the other. With this functionality, Lists can function as just that — lists — unaffected by due dates or completion status. In practice, this can mean that some Lists — say, work or school — can be used as tags for certain Action Cards while others — like a shopping list — can serve as a collection of items without a due date. Although much of Actions is about getting these done, it’s also about logging what’s important to you.

Since Lists are such a crucial part of Actions, we wanted to make certain that they were incorporated in a simple and beautiful way. Lists colors strike the perfect balance, offering a reference point via their different colors while also creating a unique set of 19 colors to choose from. In this way, we’ve left much of Actions’ interface design to you — the pairings of your List colors will determine how Actions looks.

For Lists to be effective, consider Lists that represent your overarching projects. While it’s certainly possible that your Lists can work well as specific indicators, general Lists prevent the need for too many categories. For that reason, we also recommend deleting Lists when a project ends, an action that can further declutter the app.

In an instance where you need to quickly add a List or task, you can do so via Siri. To do so, you can say things like:

  • “Create a List called Shopping in Actions”
  • “In Actions, make a List called Shopping”
  • “In Actions, add Shopping List”
  • “Make a List called Shopping in Actions”
