Now live on MTonomy: The Russian Misfortune, a tribute to a text well-known to all Russians — the classic “Woe from Wit” Filled with humor and irony, this adaptation focuses on the social protests and romanticism of Griboyedov’s time, satirizing the society of post-Napoleonic Moscow.

Griboyedov’s text is interrupted by arias, duets and choruses singing the lyrics by the contemporary poet Vadim Juk, and the music composed by the notorious Russian composer Sergey Nikitin. The director set the scenes in total darkness. Characters, or sometimes only one part of their body emerges from darkness: a hand, a face, an arm… The scene is constantly occupied by a dozen actors where five of them play the main characters. The staging follows the rule of Broadway’s “swing”; where actors, singers and dancers share the stage. All the roles are played by young actors who cast a new light on the political context of the time.
