Oscar Wilde (1854–1900) is one of the geniuses that Ireland gave to the world. Prose, poetry or drama — he mastered all literary genres. His comedies never come off the stage. His “The Ballad of Reading Gaol” constantly attracts new admirers. The mystery of his novel “The Picture of Dorian Gray” never stops teasing the imagination of romantics of all ages. And the confessional candor of “De Profundis” shakes and makes you wonder about the essence of human existence.

This title, the poetic drama “Salome”, was forbidden by the censorship of the Russian Tsars. However, in 1917 the play ran at both the Maliy and the Kamerniy Theaters, with Olga Gzovskaya starring at the Maliy, and the following cast at Kamerniy: Alice Koonen as Salome, Nikolay Tsereteli as Jokanaan, Aleksandra Ekster as the stage designer, and Alexander Tairov as stage director. Roman Viktyuk followed Tairov, refusing a historical and domestic look on the plot, and turned Wilde’s “Salome” into a charming expression of an artist’s path in the world, where love and death coexist. The drama “Salome” has become a statement of Roman Viktyuk’s theatre, bringing to life the brightest and exotic lines of the director’s style.
