Otherwise known as CCBS the California Craft Beer Summit is an annual event which takes place over 2 days with seminars on everything beer. Some popular seminars included:

  • Sour Barrel Managers Q&A: moderator Jay Goodwin (The Rare Barrel) and a list of industry leading panelists Tim Clifford (Sante Adairius), Jeremy Grinkey (Bruery Terruex) and Travis Smith (Societe Brewing Co.)
  • Sensory Training: Blind Tasting and Analysis: lead by Hoby Wedler, blind from birth, walking the audience through a sensory tasting of craft beer without using any visuals.
  • Flavor Training by Cicerone: Brewery Production Off Flavors: lead by Pat Fahey, Content Director, Cicerone® Certification Program.

On the summit floor attendees also have a chance to listen to keynote speakers including Greg Koch (Stone Brewing), Ron Silberstein (Co-Founder of Admiral Maltings), Mikkel Borg Bjergsø (Mikkeller) and Dr. Charlie Bamforth (Professor of Malting and Brewing Sciences at UC Davis).

Each night after the summit, industry professionals enjoy the Sacramento nightlife including farm-to-table restaurants (Hook & Ladder), popular bars (Jungle Bird, Empress Tavern, Coin-Op Game Room, and Pangaea Bier Cafe) and not to mention local breweries (Bike Dog Brewing, Track 7 Brewing, Device Brewing and Urban Roots Brewery & Smokehouse).

On Saturday everyone pulls together for the highlight of the summit, which is the closing Summit Beer Festival. In 2018 the festival was made up of 160 independent craft breweries from every part of California lined down Capital Mall with the state capital as the backdrop. This has got to be the best organized beer festival I have ever attended.
