Avatar: The Last Airbender is one of the greatest shows of all time — and it’s not just for kids.

It has complex characters and plot lines riddled with conflict and impressive character arcs. It’s witty, insightful, and just a feel-good show. It’s action-packed and funny, and has memorable and quotable dialogue.

During one of my latest re-watching sprees, a particular bit of conversation jumped out at me. Fans of the show will not be surprised when I say this piece of wisdom came from Prince Zuko’s Uncle Iroh — a wizened old man who often speaks in metaphors and parables.

After the pair arrived in the city of Ba Sing Se, Zuko complains to his uncle and says, “This city is a prison. I don’t want to make a life here.”

To which Iroh replies:

“Life happens wherever you are, whether you make it or not.”

Bumbling through life

At 22 years old, I was a young and inexperienced infant, hardly an adult. I had a college degree, a piece of paper that said I was smart, but no real idea of what I wanted to do for work and no clue how to sell myself to an employer.
