I click on one Instagram ad, one time, and now all I see are ads for white witchery, crystals, tarot cards, and oracle decks.

But there’s a reason they’re targeting me — the ads worked.

It’s how I found out oracle decks are a thing that exist, and I bought my first one. Here’s everything you need to know about them.

Oracle decks vs. tarot cards

Oracle decks are like tarot cards, but much simpler. You don’t have to place them in a certain way, or memorize their meanings, or know what they all mean together or when pulled in a certain order.

You just shuffle the deck, pull the card or cards that feel right, and read what they say. You can organize them in a spread, but you don’t have to. There are no rules. (Spreads are certain patterns of laying out the cards. The guide book that comes with the deck will likely have a few suggestions and tell you what each spread is designed to uncover.)

Oracle decks are typically more positive than tarot cards. Tarot cards can sometimes be ominous and allude to bad things and bad omens. Oracle decks are much brighter — you’re not going to pull a card predicting your own death, for example. You’ll…
