How your skills are transferable to tech, traits employers look for in new coders

What do employers look for when they are hiring people who are new to coding? We asked our Employer Advisory Board and other employer partners to find out.

The results of our survey revealed that employers are looking for passionate, humble people who are willing to learn new skills and can work collaboratively on a team.

Employers want to hire people who communicate their ideas effectively, are comfortable with risks, and who view failure as a means to improve and grow. Working on a software development team might be a great career path for you if you share some of these traits.

If you are considering a career move into the tech industry, you may already have many of the soft skills that tech companies are looking for.

We can share some of the responses we received from our employer partners. What they look for when they consider hiring people new to the industry include the following:

  • A passion for learning
  • A love of collaborative work
  • Acceptance of failure
  • Critical/logical thinking coupled with the ability to analyze a problem
  • Open, honest communication
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects
  • Willingness to ask for help

Do you recognize yourself in this skill set? These skills can help make you a valuable asset to employers in the tech industry. We can teach you how to code, but you already have the rest covered!

We invite you to learn to code with us at one of our free community Crash Courses, check out the schedule of crash courses on Meetup.com: https://www.meetup.com/Momentum-Learning-Meetup/.
