Think of the process instead of the product

Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Amy Shah— a double board-certified doctor and author of I’m So Effing Tired: A Proven Plan to Beat Burnout, Boost Your Energy, and Reclaim Your Life — who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“Oh, this is a good one.”

“My advice to new authors is to use writing as a creative outlet— don’t think of somebody judging your work at the start. Think of it as using the creative forces inside of you to create something. Once you create it, it’s gone from you.

For painters or musicians, if somebody insulted a painting or a song that you made, you’d just be like, ‘Oh, that was one of my works of art, but I have a lot more.’ That’s how you should think of any creative work. Put your creative work out there.

If someone doesn’t enjoy it, it’s not a personal attack. Don’t treat it like that.”
