Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Alison Bechdel — cartoonist, memoirist, and author of Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic and The Secret to Superhuman Strength— who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“My advice would be for people who want to pursue some creative thing that they enjoy.”

“I know this is very trite, but follow your bliss as Joseph Campbell directed us to do. Do the thing that makes you happy, that gives you pleasure. Don’t do it for another external reason, because you want to look different or because you want someone’s approval or you want fame. Focus on your own internal experience of what feeds you and makes you happy.

Then you can’t lose.”
