Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Jesse Q Sutanto — author of Dial A for Aunties, the #1 book in Humorous American Literature on Amazon— who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“My number-one piece of advice would be to aim low.”

“I feel like writers have really high standards. They’re like, ‘I have to aim for perfection.’ That makes us procrastinate even more. As soon as I started thinking, “my first draft can be terrible and I can just edit it later,’ that was when the words started flowing for me.

Lower your standards. It’s going to be okay. You can fix it later on. That would be my greatest advice.”
