Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Liz Astrof — an award winning executive producer, sitcom writer, and the author of the hilarious book Don't Wait Up: Confessions of a Stay-at-Work Mom— who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“Here’s the advice I learned from this writing coach.”

“Give yourself a sentence, a writing prompt like ‘My story is about X’ ‘I’m afraid of Y’ and then set a timer for twenty minutes and just meander and write.

Write without any editing, no rethinking, no going back, no judgement.

You will find a kernel of something that you can use. Trust me.

You’ll be amazed by what you come up with. I still do that.

I still use writing prompts. Try it. See what happens. That’s my advice.”
