Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Matthew John Bocchi — author of Sway— who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“It sounds very cliché, but just don’t ever give up.”

“The rejection is what I think deters a lot of writers and prevents them from continuing to pursue it. I didn’t go the traditional way. I don’t have an agent right now.

You get a couple of rejections from agents and you think, ‘My story’s not good enough,’ or ‘My writing’s not good enough.’ It’s really hard to hear it, but you have to just keep going. One day, you’ll find that fit.

It’s very easy to get in your head. You really have to stay persistent and know that your writing is good in certain ways. Someone’s going to find something in your story, whether it’s nonfiction or fiction. That would be my advice. Keep going. Don’t give up.”
