Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Adrienne Bankert — an Emmy award winning journalist and the author of Your Hidden Superpower: The Kindness That Makes You Unbeatable at Work and Connects You with Anyone — who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“Be yourself.”

“When other people become involved and you’re publishing, you sometimes might question yourself. Am I doing this right? I should listen to you because you are an expert. There are things that you need to listen to. A publishing team. Copy editors. Marketing people. I get that.

At the heart of your storytelling, you have to maintain that you know better than anybody what your story is. Don’t be inflexible. Don’t be difficult. Goodness gracious, I caused myself so much more grief because I was questioning my own story at certain times in the editing process.

But you have to have the resolve. If you become tight and stressed out, you may want to pause and just say, “time out.” I know I have a deadline, but I’ve got to be true to my own voice. At the end of the day, you want to be able to stand behind everything that’s in your book.”
