Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Peace Adzo Medie — author of the novel His Only Wife — who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“It’s important that you love what you’re writing.”

“For me, that has always worked really well. Writing takes long hours, and is very demanding. I think that if you don’t love what you’re doing, if you don’t love the story that you are telling, it will be really tough to stick with it for years and years.

I’ve been working on this book, if I count editing, for nine or ten years. If you don’t love the story, if you don’t love the characters, it will be hard to keep at it. Write the things that make you happy. Write the things that you love. Eventually, the writing will find its readers.”
