Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Kwame Alexander — author of the children’s books The Crossover Series — who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“Read as many good books as you can.”

“I was in Mexico recently, on the beach, and I did absolutely nothing but read. I had planned to not write for a while because I needed a break.

But I read a book by the poet Kevin Young called Brown, a collection of poems, and it rocked my world. I loved this book of poems. I loved it so much that when I got back home I said, “I’m ready to start writing again.” Of course, I had already decided I wasn’t going to write for a while, but a good book can inspire you to not just want to write but to want to write really well, to write about something that matters.

My advice would be read everything you can get your hands on. Enjoy it. Be inspired.”
