Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Celeste Ng — the author of the best-selling novels Little Fires Everywhere and Everything I Never Told You — who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“Write a lot. Figure out what your voice is. ”

Read a lot. It’s such a cliché, but it’s really true. That’s how you figure out what stories are important to you. Then write a lot. Try writing in a lot of different styles, a lot of different forms. That’s how you figure out what your voice is.

Write the things that scare you. Write the things that obsess you. Write the things that bewilder you. Those are the stories that you need to write.

Those are the stories that only you can write.
