Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Lolo Jones —Olympic runner and bobsledder, as well as the author of Over It: How to Face Life’s Hurdles with Grit, Hustle, and Grace— who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“I thought it was going to be easier.”

“That book now has to reach an audience. I thought, ‘Okay, the book is done. Celebrate, yes!’ Then I realized that’s just the beginning of, now you have to make sure you’re finding your audience for that book.

Whether it’s interviews or podcasts or using your social media to get the book out or even talking to your family and friends — I guess every author has to be prepared to market their own book if they want people to read it.

I was not prepared for that.”
