Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Jason Gay— Wall Street Journal sports columnist and author of Little Victories: Perfect Rules for Imperfect Living — who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“This is just my experience, but I think one of the great superpowers of writing is humility.”

“By that, I mean the ability to recognize that you don’t have the answers always. You get it wrong sometimes. You can think out loud.

There are no clear-cut answers. There are clear-cut truths, but there aren’t necessarily clear-cut answers to the big questions.

This is an old cliché, but the longer you go, the more you realize you don’t know. That can be a real asset.

I still like writing. I’m still getting something out of it. I haven’t done it all. I think that is a real vital thing no matter what you do. That’s sort of vague advice, but I’m sticking to it.”
