Wake Up and Write is a regular advice column from Moms Don’t Have Time to Write. Today, we have Aimee Molloy — author of the instant New York Times bestseller The Perfect Mother — who shared writing advice on the podcast Moms Don’t Have Time to Read Books, hosted by Zibby Owens.

“Keep writing. Every day, write whenever you can.”

“I have a friend who just published a really beautiful book called The Ones We Choose. She is a single mom of two boys. She is a fifth-grade teacher. She was diagnosed with breast cancer. Even through all that, she wakes up at four o’clock in the morning, and writes for three hours, and then goes to work, and would go to treatment, and come home.

If she can do it, we can too.

I found a writing group that was very supportive. They were willing to tell me when things were terrible and were willing to walk with me through the process.

Sometimes we think that we have to suffer alone as writers. We don’t. The best thing that you can do is to surround yourself with a very trusted group of writers who will be there to cheerlead you and also tell you when things are absolutely terrible.”
