Worthy of My Name?
In the evening, I continually read through my Bible chronologically and also do a small devotional. Tonight, my reading and my devotional were both about Daniel. Anytime that kind of “coincidence” happens, I tend to wonder what it is God is trying to tell me (even more than usual). Daniel 5:12 tells us “did this because Daniel, the one the king named Belteshazzar, was found to have an extraordinary spirit, knowledge and intelligence, and the ability to interpret dreams, explain riddles and solve problems. Therefore, summon Daniel, and he will give the interpretation.” Extraordinary spirit, knowledge, intelligence, interpreter, critical thinker, problem solver…Daniel seemed to have a good head on his shoulders!
Generations ago, surnames were given to people often based on what they did for a living, descriptive, patronymic, locational, cultural status, or nicknames. For instance, Wilson might have come from the ”son of Will” and Smith might come from being a “blacksmith.” Have you ever looked up your own name to see what meaning is associated with it based on prior history? I have! Julie means “youthful.” Tonight though, I found myself focusing on my original surname, “Daniel” and wondering if I live up to the name of Daniel. Does my own life show any of the attributes of the Bible-famed Daniel? God, help me to wear my name well. Give me a heart to represent your will, so that those that come behind me feel my name conjures up the type of words that bring you honor. I love that even though King Nebuchadnezzar tried to rename Daniel to Belteshazzar, his given name stuck… that’s the name that showed his obedience to his God. God, give me a name that sticks for you.
