By replacing reality with symbols ( words, images, formulas ), man has removed and alienated himself from the world we inhabit. It was necessary to become aware of ourselves as a mind and an entity separate from our environment, but our idea of reality is a virtual simulation created by the mind which is isolated inside the skull without any direct access to the world it assumes to be recreating …

The problem ever since acquiring consciousness has been to make ourselves feel safe and at home in an alien environment where unknown demons were lurking in the shadows. What makes us unhappy about our alienation is our idea of what the past has been and the assumption that the status of the past ought to be maintained. Progress is considered in technological terms and matters, and its purpose is to maintain a semblance of permanence by adjusting in the infinitesimals of appearances. Thus humankind has betrayed its potential to advance its mental, emotional and imaginative capacities …

Man blindly assumes the unknown to be hostile. Extraterrestrials are feared as aggressors that want our annihilation or the most horrid enslavement to feed their machines. A very accurate reflection of what we have created for ourselves, isn’t it? Spielberg’s E.T. is the exception that confirms the rule, and it’s not exactly scientific, is it? Science is logic, death and destruction, and you better eat it or else the people in white will come and getcha …

Science and technology have created an infrastructure of controls so complex we are paralyzed by its complexity. And the hostility we fear is a projection of our own attitude, not a true or reliable representation of our environment. In case of doubt, why not try a different approach and see what happens? Doubt and wonder might liberate and encourage us to abandon our adopted attitudes and expectations …

By losing faith man has lost himself. In the grip of his fear of the unknown, man has become his own worst enemy, and he feeds and raises his children on his own nightmares. Beware, beware, danger lurks everywhere! Then why does man still insist on bringing children to this world? Considering that reality is but a reflection of our expectations, why not drop that defensive attitude and show some grace and eager anticipation that allows you to detect an answer to your secret yearnings in what seems to inspire fear. The frog may turn out to be a prince, the dragon may take us on a metaphysical mystery trip, and what has not happened yet may shape our future, if we allow for it …
