First flight seals the bond
In the honor of the 92nd Academy Awards, today’s musing has been inspired by a movie. The movie being Avatar set in the year 2154 on Pandora where humans are engaged in mining Pandora’s reserves after depleting Earth’s natural resources leading to a severe energy crisis.
For those who haven’t watched the film or watched it a long time ago, here’s a scene from the movie.
When Neytiri (the Na’vi princess of the Omaticaya clan on Pandora), who has been charged with inducting Jake Sully (an ex-Marine who is one of the avatar drivers) into the clan, feels that he is ready for an important rite of passage: to bond with and ride a “declan” — a flying mountain banshee, she takes him to the banshee’s nesting grounds- the highest regions of the Hallelujah Mountains.
The height and the ferocity of the untamed banshees make this a dangerous mission. Jake must tame his spirit-banshee by over-powering him in a fight and making the bond through their tendrils. When he succeeds in making this bond, Neytiri runs up to him and says ‘First flight seals the bond’ while pushing Jake off the mountains. What follows is the legendary first flight of Jake Sully in his Na’vi avatar with Neytri by his side. What an iconic scene!
This scene has stayed with me for years. Not because it is a success story but because of the lesson we learn.
The first flight seals the bond for everything in life. It has been a guiding principle in my life for so many years.
