You could buy the first thing you see for someone or get them a gift card when social norm calls for it. Or you could invest time and think about the person and their personality.

Besides, gifting needn’t be occasion based. It can, nay should be random. You see something that reminds you of someone, just pick it up. It will always put a smile on that person’s face.
