The only one habit you will ever need to quit

My new favourite Hollywood duo is Kristen Bell and her husband Dax Shepard. They are both people who have grappled with a lot issues and they share their struggles openly. And as you know, I am a fan of character built through struggle.

This morning I watched an excerpt from an interview of Dax. The first few minutes of this video really stood out for me.

He speaks about how he was embarrassed about having failed at trying to quit alcohol and drug abuse many many times. But what he failed to notice was how he also failed to quit. (Please watch the first 1.5 mins of the video now if you haven’t already)

And that’s the only real part of our job- not quitting. We judge the success of an endeavor based on the results. We think if we tinker around enough, we can influence the results. Sure, there are enough instances of success in each of our lives to believe that that must be the case.

As humbling as it is, we have to realise that the results are out of our control. And all we can do is quit quitting just because we didn’t get results the first or the hundredth time.
