The holiday season can be overwhelming for a variety of reasons. You have to plan a get-together, buy everything on your gift list while fainting from inflation prices, and of course try to figure out how to cook a ham so you can impress your partner’s family. The last thing you need to worry about is what you are going to wear. However, the outfit you wear while serving that delicious ham you ordered from DoorDash is just as important! But don’t worry, I have a few style breakdowns for you so you can pick the perfect outfit to wow your future mother-in-law!

Classic Chic

I always like to describe the classic chic aesthetic as a modern European- inspired look. It gives off a timeless yet updated vibe all at the same time. This aesthetic usually allows you to flow from an early morning work meeting to a late night dinner date. It’s clean, refined, and fresh. It includes timeless pieces such as a blazer, a button-up, slacks, and turtle or mock necks. The color palette can vary greatly from neutral beige to dark maroons and blues or even to pastel green or yellow. For a nice holiday get together, I would suggest wearing a neutral or deep toned top, preferably a sweater or button-up, with a nice pair of slacks. To add an extra bit of refinement, throw on some gold or rose-gold jewelry. This outfit allows you to stay comfortable but look effortlessly gorgeous at the same time.

Glamorous

Now, I know the chic style isn’t for everyone. The main complaint I hear about the classic chic aesthetic is that it is very similar to work attire. A lot of people like to show off their nicest clothing during the holiday season and I am all for it! However, many people are afraid to experiment with their flashier wardrobe pieces so here are a few tips to truly make a statement this year. If you are going for sparkle, the shimmer, or sequins, make sure your look is balanced! You want everyone’s eyes to be drawn to your outfit; your hair can get lost sometimes so opt for a very simple hairstyle. If you are wearing something shimmery, maybe go for simple jewelry like studded earring and a herringbone necklace. If you aren’t going for sparkle and are maybe wearing a vibrant red or a L.B.D. (little black dress), this is your time to pull out your flashiest jewelry! Regardless of the tips I gave you for the glamorous aesthetic, you can go as big or as quiet as you want. If “more is more” is your motto then go for it!

Preppy

This aesthetic seems to be pretty popular around the holiday season. The preppy aesthetic shows off a more expensive and studious look. It’s sort of like the precursor to the academia aesthetics that have gained popularity recently. This aesthetic reminds me of an old-money family but instead of showing off their wealth through clothes, they show off their legacy line of Harvard graduates. The trademark items for this look are polo shirts, plaid, ties/bow ties, lace, and the literal use of a white collar. An example of this aesthetic in action would be an outfit consisting of a turtle or mock neck sweater tucked nicely into a plaid A-line skirt. Go for tight curls or an up-do such as a bun and side swept bangs. For added warmth, grabbing a pair of tights and a cute pair of boots can help in the colder climates.
